David Lee's inspiration for this project stems from the geometric lines, patterns, and sophisticated art patterns of Art Deco. However, he also wanted to emphasize the aesthetics presented by the material itself, as well as the non-industrial atmosphere created by handicraft projects. This effect, in fact, more closely resembles the natural decoration of Art Nouveau that emphasizes on handicrafts and denies any symbol of the mechanical era. The result is a harmonious blend of both styles, creating a space filled with diverse imagination and a carefree ambiance.
The uniqueness of "Back to Wonderful Time" lies in its main ceiling in the lobby lounge. Lee used mirror-polished stainless steel sheets arranged irregularly and freely. These free curves floating in the space resemble the clouds in the sky, creating a changing visual effect from different angles via sunlight in the morning and artificial lighting at night. This design element introduces a new artistic handicraft ambiance and a unique spatial effect.
Completed on December 30, 2016, the project serves as the public space of a congregate housing. The building exterior has an Art Deco expression, and this basic vocabulary and spirit are extended to the public facility and lobby to shape the prototype of the initial design. The emphasis is on presenting the aesthetics of the material, more resembling the natural decor of Art Nouveau that emphasizes on handicrafts.
The design's uniqueness and innovation did not go unnoticed. In 2017, "Back to Wonderful Time" was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award. This prestigious accolade is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
In conclusion, David Lee's "Back to Wonderful Time" is a testament to the power of blending different design styles to create a unique and engaging public space. It stands as a shining example of how design can transcend industrial trends to create spaces filled with warmth, craftsmanship, and artistic ambience.
